With the right advice, pregnancy and motherhood can be a carefree experience.

First signs of pregnancy

After fertilisation the hormonal balance in a woman's body starts to change. Some pregnant women notice changes as early as a week after the egg is fertilised by a sperm. Others take slightly longer. If you don't notice any changes, your suspicions may be raised by an overdue period. That is the time to take a pregnancy test, after which you can settle down and enjoy being an expectant mother. The first signs of pregnancy can differ greatly, so make sure not to make too many comparisons with other pregnant women. If you have any doubts it is better to speak to your doctor.

The most common first signs of pregnancy:

  • missed period,
  • sore/tender breasts,
  • feeling sick in the morning or all day,
  • feeling more tired than usual,
  • need to urinate frequently,
  • constipation,
  • heightened sensitivity to smells,
  • mood swings.
